Abstract
This study was conducted to examine foreign language anxiety in high school students at SMPN 1 Kabanjahe. In particular it seeks to identify factors that contribute to anxiety in learning English based on students' perspectives. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with a case study approach. 34 students who felt anxious were selected as participants. The data were collected through the questionnaire and structured interviews. The results showed that speaking in front, being laughed at by others, lessons that could not be obtained, what students believed about language learning, the nature of the teacher, and lack of preparation were the factors that contributed to the students' anxiety in learning English.
