Abstract

The title of this thesis is "The influence of group discussion methods on students' English speaking skills". This research was conducted by class VII-1 students at SMP Negeri 2 Berastagi and is included in the Experimental research category. The data collection process includes pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The target population consisted of 32 students of class VII-1 of SMP Negeri 2 Berastagi, all of whom showed the same level of proficiency in speaking skills. To determine the sample, purposive random sampling techniques were used. The sample consists of 2 groups, namely the experimental group (x) and the control group (y). Inquiry techniques were used to teach the experimental group, while the control group received teaching about greeting sentences. Each group consisted of 16 students, especially the experimental group showed a higher post-test score compared to the pre-test score. In particular, 8 students scored higher than the average score of 38.7 on the pre-test. After implementation involving group discussion techniques, the experimental group showed an increase in performance, with 28 students achieving a score higher than the average score on the post-test (46.73). Next, the data was calculated using a t-test, resulting in a value of 4.906. The t-test value exceeds the critical t value at a confidence level of 0.05 and a confidence level of 0.01 with a degree of 58. As a result, the null hypothesis which states "group discussion techniques do not improve students' speaking skills" is rejected, while the alternative hypothesis which states that "discussion techniques group improves students' speaking skills “accepted.
